I'm going to go buy an acoustic guitar for Christmas, but I'm not really sure what I should get. I am planning on going to Guitar Center to try some of them out, but I want some suggestions of guitars I should be looking at.
Norman acoustics are good.

Take a look at the Takamine acoustic guitar. There are different styles to choose from and they are all hand made. I've had mine for over 18 years now.

Get something with a solid top, so that when you do get a nice sound you will recognize it as a sweet sound and want to make more sweet sounds. Cheaper made guitars only sound good in the hands of experienced players. A beginner has to work to hard to get a decent sound out of a cheap built guitar. You can get an excellent used or new solid top guitar for between $200.00 - $300.00. Shop around and look for a solid spruce top, not just spruce, but solid spruce.I think Yamaha or Eppihone would be okay. Just don't settle for a cheap made guitar, even if it is a name brand. Don't buy one of those Esteban guitars off of of the HSN. Whatever you decide to get, take it to a qualified guitar tech and have a proper set-up to insure proper intonation and playability.

For that dollar amount you listed. You should have no problem finding one. Make sure you like it and are very comfortable with it too. Good luck

Yamaha has a great reputation for quality, low cost dreadnoughts.
Ovation has some acoustic/electric types that are
very versatile.
If your a newbe,
have an expert check out the action (playability,
high or low frets, buzzing or rattling etc.)
and straightness of the neck before you purchase.
and get a fret-tone wipe kit and a case to protect it!
That'll keep it "Finger Pickin' Good!"
